Since the code of the Smart Order Router is publicly available, anyone can run their own SOR arbitrage bot with a tailored set of rules and customized order-matching algorithms. Therefore, the Smart Order Router operators are not only contributing to the further decentralization of the protocol but also benefiting from arbitrage opportunities.

SORs exclusively earn fees from bid-ask spreads, which fluctuate depending on volatility, trading volumes, and other market inefficiencies. No need to provide funds above the required collateral UTxO of 5 ADA, which is needed on the Cardano platform to be able to interact with smart contracts.

The flexibility of SORs to redeploy their service to other fragmented liquidity pools for higher reward margins presents more advantages for the SOR operator.

SORs can be customized by adding novel matching strategies and soon SORs will be able to match a much wider range of flexibly configurable advanced order types, beyond the already available limit orders.
